As the title suggests, it was definitely a ‘good night’ to remember when a group of us whom had been meaning to “catch up” for some time decided to book a reservation at Simpson’s in Birmingham, Edgbaston in November 2016. As we pulled up at the front of the building all of us couldn’t help, but re-check the sat nav on the dashboard, as it had a hotel look to it. “You have arrived at your destination”. Hmm, so we are at the right place after all. Due to the Christmas season ahead, the trees on the courtyard were decorated with lights and red ribbons.
Upon arrival we handed our coats and headed straight to our table. The dining hall was elegantly modern, with the use of large wooden tables and a glass window allowing a two way viewing both to the kitchen staff and the customers. Quite impressive and noteworthy.
Due to the inappropriate timing of our late lunch that afternoon, we decided to go straight into mains on the a la carte menu, skipping appetisers.
As we drank through our cocktails, out came our mains. Not to sound too pretentious, but we did have a slight low expectations of this place- don’t ask us why! Perhaps, because it was in the Midlands, as opposed to London. Who knows! But, as the great quote goes, “Never judge a book by its cover” and as great fools, we did. Hands up. We were in for a shock, as our mains just stunned us, by not only the extremely ornate presentation, but also by the depth of flavours that was pouring of the plate. It was flawless, a masterpiece in the making.
We ordered the sea bass with vegetables, chicken with goats curd and a vegetarian option for the non-meat eaters. Each dish complimented everything else on the plate so well, that we were surprised not to be able to criticize anything.
You know the food is good when the catch up revolves around the food, which was the case this fine evening.
Then the deserts came and by far the best chocolate soufflé I have ever had, so good that the Mrs pretty much had it all.
In short, great food, great service and all at Midlands’s prices – London’ers you have got to love this place!
